Today, I Turned 60. What is it like?
Today, I turned 60! What is it like, people ask.
I see a mountain behind me and a mountain ahead of me. I stand in the valley of 60. It is peaceful, relaxing, exciting, retrospective, introspective, and a million other adjectives all reflecting my life.
The Mountain Behind Me
The mountain I crossed to get here has a clarity I just didn’t see as I crossed it. I can see the path I took to reach the valley of 60, in vivid color, as if I just crossed it. In retrospect, I can see the stumbles I made along the way and how they affected my journey. Yet, I can see that as much as they hurt at the time, and as much as I beat myself up over them, I still reached this valley of peace
Every path not taken, also comes into clarity. There were a million of them. For a long while, I lamented on not taking some of them. I can now see that this was wasted energy as we can never go back in life, we can only move forward. No matter which path we choose, we always have the chance to reach our happy valley later in life.
The Valley of 60
For the most part, I am happy with the choices I have made. I never sacrificed my values and the morals my parents instilled in me. Sure, I have done things I am not proud of, but my moral compass was still there to guide me and get me back on track. I am proud to stand here today knowing that I have enriched the lives of many who have walked part of my path with me.
I now have a confidence in myself from the experience, knowledge and wisdom I have gained from my journey. Although some say I am over the hill, I feel I am well versed and posed for the climb ahead.
The Mountain Ahead
This leads me to the mountain in front of me. We are either moving forward or stagnating. There is no standing still. I spent the first half of my life making money, but I will spend the rest of my days making a difference.
That is the mountain I intend to climb. The mountain of interdependence! The mountain of helping others on their journey in life through the experience, knowledge, and wisdom God has granted me. So I start my climb at 60 to ages unknown with gratitude.
The Greatest Gift: Gratitude
Gratitude for the people in my life. Thankfulness for my mind, body, and spirit which I have been graced with. Gratitude for the clarity and purpose bestowed upon me.
We all get better with age. Anybody who says anything to the contrary, speaks out of ignorance. It is hard to see what lies ahead on a path not taken. Only our choice to move forward, and our view of our own value can shape the mountain of our future. I thank God for getting me to 60, and giving me the wisdom needed to go forward.
They say 60 is just a number. I say 60 is 6 perfect 10’s!!!
